L-arginine which is a semi-essential amino acid has different functions in the body. This amino acid is naturally produced by the body or is also present from some of the foods that we eat. We can purchase it as a supplement too. One of the benefits of L-arginine is that it helps with infertility. It increases both the sperm count and sperm motility or the ability of the sperm to swim vigorously. Let us then be familiar with the effects of L-arginine on sperm.
L-Arginine on Sperm Count
According to a research done by the University of Michigan Health System website, taking L-arginine for several months can help increase sperm count. But those men who relatively have very low sperm count cannot benefit from this supplement anymore. A study was conducted among 178 men who took 4 grams of arginine daily. This study is in the Journal of Nutrition in 1985 and it was cited in there that results show that 62% showed significant improvement in sperm count and 28% among the participants have moderate improvement.
L-Arginine on Sperm Motility
According to an Indian study published in the “Biology of reproduction” in Jan. 25, 2006 ed., they stated that sperm cells synthesize nitric oxide from L-arginine. This nitric oxide is needed to enhance sperm vitality which is helpful during the fertilization process. Some previous studies reported that sperm motility is being enhanced by giving L-arginine to infertile men.
L-Arginine on Cellular Metabolism
It was also indicated in an article in the “Biophysical Journal” in Sept. 1998, that L-arginine enhances the sperm’s ability to utilize glycol which is needed for energy. Glycolysis aids the sperm cell to maximize the development of adenosine triphosphate known as ATP. This cellular process increases the sperm’s ability to move its flagella back and forth so as to move itself forward.
L-Arginine on Sexual Dysfunction
The American Medical Association noted that there are 31% among men suffer from sexual dysfunction while women have 43%. When we say sexual dysfunction, it is the inability of a person to enjoy sexual intercourse fully. For women, it is the condition in which they loss libido or the inability to achieve orgasm. For men, they called it impotence or known as erectile dysfunction.
Since L-arginine is an essential amino acid and is one of the building blocks of protein in the body, it is considered as a safe and effective sexual nutrient for both men and women. The reason that lies behind this is that L-arginine synthesizes nitric oxide which is not only important for blood circulation but also known to be necessary for sexual functioning. Without arginine there will be no nitric oxide that can help erections among men.
L-Arginine and Erections
Another factor that can influence erection is the blood flow. Insufficient blood flow can lead to incomplete erection. L-arginine is known to improve blood flow onto the genital area through dilation of blood vessels which can help the penis to enlarge in its full capacity thus making the penis increase its size, as well as hardness and make frequent erections.
These are things that connect L-arginine with sperm. L-arginine is then essential for the functioning of the penis and for erections and production of sperms. Take note though that you must consult your doctor before using one.
